When I was younger, and still to this day, my parents would tell me to "watch what I put on social networks." Thanks to my parents, the fact that nothing really ever disappears from the internet serves as a precaution to me. A person's personal life can heavily impact their work/academic life in a good or bay way; it all depends on what his or her personal life is like.
A few years ago surfaced a video of Barack Obama, the President of the United States, smoking marijuana. Obama was in college during the time of the video. Although, he never did get into any serious trouble, there still a lot of controversy over whether he should or shouldn't remain in his position. Politicians have to be especially careful when it comes to publicizing their personal lives. I believe that celebrities also have to be especially careful when it comes to maintaining a healthy personal life (or whatever the media considers "healthy"). Trending now is the Ray Rice incident where Rice, a professional football player, publicly assaulted his fiancee inside an elevator. In the past, there were instances where singers and actresses were drug abusers, and this negatively impacted their careers.
In a more relative demonstration, one's personal life can also affect his or her academic life also. As a current college student now, I am seeing everything I was warned about in high school. If one is more of a party person (thank God I'm not), chances are he or she will have a harder time focusing on the purpose of attending college; not failing class. There seems to be a direct correlation between positive and negatives lifestyles and work or academic success.
